Broadband is sold on one number, and it is usually the wrong one to focus on.
The industry advertises download speed because it is a single figure that gets bigger, which makes it easy to market and easy to compare. For most households it stopped being the limiting factor several years ago. Meanwhile the things that genuinely determine whether your internet feels good — upload speed, latency, and your Wi-Fi — barely feature in the sales conversation.
Here is a straight answer about what you need.
What things actually consume
Approximate download requirements per simultaneous activity:

The arithmetic is additive, so a demanding evening might look like: two 4K streams (50), someone gaming (5), two phones on social (10), a video call (4 down / 4 up) — about 70 Mbps down.
That is a busy household with everything running at once, and it comfortably fits inside a 100 Mbps connection.
So who actually needs gigabit?
Genuinely, two groups.
Households that download very large files often. Modern games run to 100-150 GB. On 50 Mbps that is around six hours; on gigabit, roughly fifteen minutes. If someone in your house does this weekly, the difference is felt every week.
Households that upload a lot. Video editors sending footage, photographers uploading shoots, anyone routinely pushing large files to cloud storage. See below — this is where the real gap sits.
Everyone else is buying headroom. Headroom is not worthless: it means the connection never becomes the bottleneck, and if it costs a pound or two more, take it. But if gigabit costs £15 a month more than 150 Mbps, you are paying £360 over two years for capacity you will not use.
The useful test is not “what is the fastest available” but “does my connection ever feel slow, and if so, is it actually the connection?”
The number that matters more than download: upload
This is the single most under-discussed figure in UK broadband.
On older copper-based connections — the “fibre to the cabinet” products still widely sold — upload is typically 10-20 Mbps against 60-70 down. Full fibre is often symmetric, or close to it: 500 down and 500 up.
Upload determines:
- whether you are the person who freezes on video calls. Your outgoing video is upload. Two people on calls in one house on a 10 Mbps upload is genuinely tight.
- cloud backup and file sync, which quietly saturates a small upload and makes everything else feel slow.
- anything you send, from photos to large work files.
If you work from home and your connection feels unreliable during calls, upload is a much more likely culprit than download. Someone on a 900/900 full fibre line has a fundamentally different experience from someone on 67/18, even though the download difference is what the advertising talks about.
Latency, and why gamers should ignore the headline speed
Latency is how long a packet takes to make the round trip, measured in milliseconds. It has almost nothing to do with your advertised speed.
For gaming and video calls, latency and consistency matter far more than throughput. A stable 40 Mbps connection with 12 ms latency plays better than an erratic 900 Mbps one with 60 ms and periodic spikes.
Roughly what to expect:
- Full fibre: typically single-digit to low-teens milliseconds
- Copper-based (FTTC): commonly 15-30 ms
- Fixed wireless: usually low, and often comparable to fibre on a well-engineered link
- 4G/5G: low to moderate, but more variable
- Satellite: materially higher — the physics of the distance involved
If someone in your house games competitively, a full-fibre 150 Mbps connection is a better purchase than a 900 Mbps connection on an older technology.
The thing that is probably actually slowing you down
Your Wi-Fi.
If you pay for 500 Mbps and get 60 in the back bedroom, you did not buy the wrong package — the signal is not reaching. Upgrading to a faster package will change nothing at all, because the bottleneck is between your router and your laptop, not between your router and the internet.
Before spending money on more speed:
- Test with a cable. Plug a laptop directly into the router. If that is fast and Wi-Fi is not, the problem is Wi-Fi.
- Move the router. Central, off the floor, out of the cupboard, away from the microwave.
- Consider mesh Wi-Fi for larger or older houses. Thick stone walls defeat a single router.
- Check how old the router is. A router from 2016 cannot deliver 2026 speeds regardless of the line behind it.
This costs less than a speed upgrade and fixes the problem far more often.

And one rule that overrides all of it: if the faster package costs about the same, take the faster package. Providers frequently price tiers close together, and intro offers routinely make a faster tier cheaper than a slower one for the first year. There is no virtue in buying less speed for the same money.
What this means for how you compare
Filter by the speed you need first, then compare on cost. Not the other way round — a cheap connection that is too slow is not a saving, and an expensive one you cannot use is not a purchase.
