In the third quarter of 2025, Ookla measured a median Starlink download speed in the United Kingdom of 106.63 Mbps, with 37ms latency. That is a genuinely usable connection. It is also one of the slowest Starlink medians in Europe — only Denmark, Albania and Bulgaria were worse, and Ireland managed 155.23 Mbps on the same constellation.
That gap is the story of Starlink in Britain. The technology works. Whether it works well enough, and cheaply enough, for you is a different question — and for most UK households the honest answer is no, because something better already reaches the property.

What Starlink actually is, and why it is not the satellite broadband you remember
Satellite broadband has existed in the UK for two decades and was, for most of that time, awful — because of orbital mechanics rather than bad engineering.
Traditional satellite uses geostationary (GEO) satellites parked roughly 36,000km above the equator. A signal travels up to the satellite, down to a ground station, and the reply makes the same trip back. Ookla measured the two big GEO operators at median latencies of 683ms (HughesNet) and 684ms (Viasat) in the first quarter of 2025. Anything above roughly 150ms makes real-time conversation uncomfortable; at 600ms-plus, a video call is two people talking over each other.
Low Earth Orbit (LEO) constellations like Starlink fly at roughly 550km — about one-sixty-fifth of the distance. Ookla put Starlink’s global median latency at 45ms in the same quarter, and its UK figure of 37ms in Q3 2025 is comparable to a mediocre fixed line rather than to old satellite. That single change made satellite usable for video calls, VPNs and internet telephony for the first time, and it deserves saying plainly before the criticisms start.
The trade-off is that a satellite 550km up covers a small patch of ground and moves fast, so you need thousands of them. SpaceX had around 9 million customers worldwide at the end of 2025, roughly 110,000 of them in the UK as of July 2025 (up from 87,000 a year earlier), and overwhelmingly rural.

Starlink’s own claim for the entry tier: download up to 100 Mbps (typically 80–100 Mbps), upload 15–35 Mbps, including a Router Mini covering up to 120m². The £40 price is confirmed; the £60 and £80 tiers are as listed by price tracker findcheapbroadband in August 2026 and are offered only at some addresses, so treat them as indicative. Hardware is extra: the Standard kit has been widely sold at around £299 including VAT, but Starlink also runs zero-upfront and rental variants depending on address and plan. Get the actual checkout total for your own postcode.
The 2026 price history is a reason for caution in itself
This is not a stable tariff. In eight months:
- 15 January 2026 — Residential 100 Mbps launches at £35 a month.
- 17 May 2026 — a £5 rise is announced on most plans, effective for billing cycles on or after 18 June. The £35 tier becomes £40, four months after launch.
- Early June 2026 — a £10 a month hardware rental charge is imposed on new residential customers.
- Around 18 July 2026 — that £10 charge is quietly dropped again.
- Separately, Standby Mode doubled from £4.50 to £9 a month.
Compare how a UK fixed-line provider must now behave. Under Ofcom General Condition C1, in force since 17 January 2025, inflation-linked and percentage mid-contract rises are banned in new consumer contracts: a provider must state a Core Subscription Price in pounds and pence, plus the exact monetary increase and the date it applies. So Hey!Broadband can sell you 150 Mbps at £23 a month, rising to £25 in April 2027 and £27 in April 2028 — you know your worst case for three years on the day you sign. (The ban covers the headline subscription. Percentage escalators can still turn up on out-of-bundle charges: Vodafone, for example, continues to apply CPI+3.9% to those.)
Starlink is not sold under a UK fixed-term consumer contract of that kind. You get the flexibility of cancelling any month, and the exposure of a price with no contractual ceiling. If budget certainty matters, that asymmetry is the most important thing on this page.
There is also a one-off congestion charge. It appeared in April 2025, when Starlink lifted a months-long stop-sell across Greater London and the South East and replaced it with a £195 one-time fee for new residential activations in congested areas. ISPreview reported in April 2026 that some users coming off Standby Mode were being asked for it too. Ofcom has acknowledged that such charges can be steep enough to stop Starlink counting as a viable connection. Check whether one applies to your address.
The speed question, answered honestly
Starlink advertises its entry tier as “up to 100 Mbps”. Notice the wording, because a UK fixed-line provider is not allowed to use it. Since 23 May 2018, CAP and BCAP rules have required numerical speed claims in residential broadband advertising to be average speeds achievable by at least 50% of customers at peak time (8–10pm) — which is why Openreach-based gigabit packages are advertised at around 900 Mbps average rather than 1000 Mbps.
So “up to 100 Mbps” and “900 Mbps average speed” are not comparable claims. The second is a floor for half of customers at the busiest hour of the evening; the first is a ceiling. Here is what independent measurement found — Ookla, Q3 2025, median Starlink download speed:

The UK figure was up from 87.06 Mbps a year earlier, so it is improving. But Ireland — a comparable island market, on the same satellites — was 46% faster. Only Denmark, Albania and Bulgaria (38.30 Mbps) ranked below the UK.
Why the UK is slow on Starlink
Starlink divides its coverage into geographic cells, and each cell has a finite amount of capacity to share among the subscribers inside it. Add subscribers without adding capacity and everyone’s speed falls.
England is one of the most densely populated countries in Europe, so there are a lot of people inside each cell — including people who could get fibre but chose satellite. UK performance is not really limited by the dish on your roof; it is limited by how many other dishes point at the same satellites from the same patch of ground. SpaceX has been adding ground capacity: it already runs six gateway sites in the British Isles and applied to Ofcom for two more, at Harlow in Essex and Mulberry Wharf in London, in a consultation that closed on 17 April 2026 with Ofcom’s preliminary view being to grant them. That should help. The constraint is still structural.
You may not be able to buy it at all
When a cell fills up, the Starlink availability map shows “Waitlist” or “Sold Out”, residential activations are blocked, and no timeline is given. This is not a theoretical risk; it has already happened in Britain.
From around December 2024, the area roughly bounded by Oxford, Cambridge and Portsmouth showed as sold out or waitlisted, taking in parts of London, Kent and Sussex, with far-east Kent (Ramsgate, Dover, Folkestone) an exception and the South West unaffected. Starlink lifted that block in April 2025 — not by adding enough capacity to make the problem go away, but by letting people buy in and charging them the £195 congestion fee instead. Installer blogs have gone on describing South East waitlists since, but their accounts conflict with each other and with the trade press, and some still quote a congestion charge Starlink no longer uses.
The honest position is that the mechanism is real and permanent, the specific map is not, and no third party reports it reliably. Check the map for your own postcode, on the day. Satellite is not a guaranteed fallback you can invoke whenever you like — if you are buying a rural property on the assumption it will bail you out, confirm availability at that address first.
Sky view, weather and the electricity bill
Clear sky view is non-negotiable. The dish tracks satellites across a wide arc — 110 degrees on the Gen 3 Standard, up from 100 on Gen 2 — and a tree, chimney or neighbouring roof clipping that arc produces intermittent dropouts rather than a clean failure. Use the app’s obstruction checker from the exact mounting position before you buy, not from the garden.
Weather degrades it. Heavy rain and wet snow attenuate the Ku-band signal. Starlink’s specification sheet credits the Standard (Gen 3) dish with a snow-melt heater rated to clear up to 40mm of snowfall an hour — which costs extra power exactly when you are least likely to notice.
Power draw is the thing people forget. Starlink’s own specification puts average power usage for the Standard (Gen 3) at 75–100W, running 24 hours a day — roughly 660 to 880 kWh a year. At the Ofgem price cap electricity unit rate of 26.11p per kWh for 1 July to 30 September 2026, that is about £172 to £229 a year, or £14 to £19 a month on top of the subscription. Third-party testing has recorded lower figures when the dish is idle, so your real bill may sit under that, but it is not a rounding error either way: a typical FTTP router draws a fraction of it. For off-grid properties this is decisive — a dish averaging 80W needs about 1.9 kWh a day just to exist.
The USO change: the story nobody told you about
This is the most consequential development of 2026 for rural households, and it has had almost no mainstream coverage.
The broadband Universal Service Obligation gives eligible premises the right to request a connection capable of at least 10 Mbps download, with BT the designated provider across most of the country. Industry funds up to £3,400 per premises; above that, the customer is quoted the excess. Ofcom data to January 2026 put around 39,000 UK premises still unable to get decent broadband from a fixed or fixed wireless connection — 23,000 in England, 9,000 in Scotland, 6,000 in Wales and 1,500 in Northern Ireland. BT’s April 2026 biannual update reported 9,089 USO connections built, up from 8,553 six months earlier, with 461 more in progress. That is not a fast-moving programme.
The USO only applies where no qualifying alternative exists, and Starlink was previously not treated as one, partly on cost grounds. On 13 July 2026, Ofcom confirmed to ISPreview that it now counts. The practical consequence, reported by applicants: BT has been rejecting USO applications on the basis that Starlink is available at the address.
Someone who two years ago might have had a subsidised fixed connection built to their property — an asset that stays with the house, works in bad weather, costs a few watts to run and carries Ofcom’s price-rise rules, automatic compensation and One Touch Switch — may now be told to buy a dish instead, paying hardware, £40 a month with no contractual ceiling, possibly a congestion charge, and £14–£19 a month in electricity.
Ofcom’s own caveats are your grounds for pushing back: Starlink is not available everywhere, not everyone can achieve a clear sky view or mount a dish, pricing varies, and congestion charges can be steep enough to disqualify it. In those cases you can still approach BT on USO terms — if your application was refused on Starlink grounds and any of those apply, say so in writing.
So who is Starlink actually for?
Buy it if:
- Your property is genuinely remote — no full fibre, no realistic fibre build, no usable 4G or 5G. A 106 Mbps median at 37ms is transformative if the alternative is 3 Mbps ADSL.
- You are on a boat, in a motorhome or moving between sites. The Roam products exist for this and nothing terrestrial competes.
- You are running a temporary site — construction, events, film production, disaster response — where waiting twelve weeks for a fibre install is not an option.
- You need a diverse backup line for a business. Satellite fails independently of the ducts and cabinets your primary circuit depends on, so for a business that loses money when the line drops, £40 a month is cheap insurance.
Do not buy it if:
- You can get FTTP. Full fibre is faster, more stable, unaffected by weather, cheaper to run and covered by Ofcom’s consumer protections. Hey!Broadband was listing 150 Mbps average speed at £23 a month, 400 Mbps at £33 and 900 Mbps at £43 in August 2026, with free router and standard install.
- You have solid 5G or 4G. Three’s home broadband was £22 a month in August 2026, rising to £24.30 in April 2027 and £26.60 in April 2028, with a 30-day money-back guarantee. Vodafone’s started at £18 on 24 months, rising to £21.50 on 1 April 2027 and £25 on 1 April 2028.
- Your budget is tight and fixed. The price volatility above is disqualifying if you need to know what you will pay next year.
- You cannot get a clear sky view. No amount of support will fix a tree.
Amazon Leo: the competitor that is not here yet
Amazon’s constellation, renamed from Project Kuiper in November 2025, received Ofcom approval in February 2025. It had around 396 satellites in orbit after a launch on 2 July 2026, against the 500-plus generally cited as the minimum for basic global coverage, and consumer rollout is targeted for mid-to-late 2026 in priority markets including the UK.
As of August 2026 you cannot buy it in the UK, and Amazon has never published a UK consumer price. Competition should eventually push satellite pricing down, but “eventually” is not a plan.
What to check before you order a dish
- Check what full fibre reaches your postcode. Altnets frequently reach rural addresses the incumbents skipped. Ofcom’s Connected Nations postcode data gives the percentage of premises near you with full fibre, though it names no operators.
- Check 4G and 5G at the property. Ofcom publishes a free mobile coverage checker by postcode. Then test a fixed wireless router on a short term or money-back offer, where the router will actually live — signal at the front door and in the back bedroom are different things.
- Only then price Starlink, including hardware, any congestion charge and the electricity.

Should I choose Starlink or 5G home broadband?
If you have a usable 5G signal, choose 5G. In August 2026 Three’s home broadband was £22 a month and Vodafone’s started at £18 on a 24-month term, both with disclosed pounds-and-pence future rises, both cheaper to run, neither needing a clear view of the sky. Test with a money-back offer first. Starlink makes sense only where mobile coverage genuinely is not adequate.
